For the not yet jaded or weary, it was the Vancouver night scene's most thrilling spectacle for most of three decades. For a good many Vancouverites from disco age and younger, the heyday of the Luv-a-Fair at Seymour and Drake was the heyday of Vancouver's club scene. In the late '70s, early '80s, it transformed from a strictly disco-playing gay bar to punk rock and new wave sanctuary -- while every other club in town played Top 40. Through the dry ice billowing across the dance floor, you might see a mile-long drag queen lounging across one of the speakers. The speakers perfectly symbolized the place's tongue-in-cheek, see-and-be-seen philosophy. They were the display pedestal for the best-dressed, best-looking, or simply the vainest or highest. This is where the first-so-called DJ as Star was born in Vancouver. DJ's Richard Evans, Steven Gilmore, Terry McBride (Nettwerk), Kim Clarke ( MuchMusic) ceVIN Key, David Hawkes, George Mantanis, Jeremy, Darren Reiter & others   GRACELAND: Located at 1250 Richards Street. The special nightclub/live venue/art gallery was called Graceland. Graceland gave birth to Vancouver's house music scene. Late in 1987, Robert Shea decided he had enough house music records "to play house music all night long", and COME TO HOUSE was born. Other DJs of Graceland were taking note, and soon house music could be heard in various quantities on a variety of nights, including those of DJs Mick Shea, Debbie Jones, Phil Fontaine, and in later years DJ Noah, David Hawkes, etc. Other well known Djs also got some of their early breaks at Graceland, including DJ Jeremy, DJ Darren, DJ Ritchie, James Brown, DJ Czech, Leanne, etc. The worlds leading DJ's/Producers/Acts such as Sven Vath, Laurent Garnier, Westbam, The Orb, Consolidated, MC 900 ft Jesus, Autechre, Banco De Gaia and even the Red Hot Chilli Peppers all performed there.
